Where can I find my customer reference number and password?
Your customer number is always printed in the top left hand corner of your delivery advice note above your name and address. It can also be found on any emails or statements we send you. If you have forgotten either your customer number or password, we can send you reminders by email if you click the Login button and follow the instructions down the left hand side of the page.
How long is my contract with Farmers Choice?
There is no minimum term - you are not tied in to us.
What penalties apply if I leave Farmers Choice?
There are no penalties. Any debit balance in your account will have to be cleared. Any credit balance in your account can be used to buy meat/fish.
What does your 12 month price guarantee actually mean?
You will be given a leaflet when you place your first order, which lists current products and prices per kilo. These are the prices (before any applicable discount such as the 10% current online one) you will pay for any orders placed and delivered within the following 11 months. Prices may go down as well as up .... but which is the most likely?
Can I have a joint account with my parents?
Accounts are per household and standing orders can only come from just one bank account. We hope that answers your question. If not then please e-mail us with more details and we'll be pleased to see if there's anything we can do to help.
How long am I tied into Farmers Choice for?
You are not tied in. You are perfectly free to order in the quantities you want and whenever you want, with no ties. We just encourage people to pay by standing order instead of cash as it enables them to budget properly and also helps us to pay our farmers on a regular basis rather than having them rely on market prices when they are ready to sell.
Where can I find information regarding the special offers and discounts I am entitled to?
All information for discounts and special offers can be found under the terms and conditions, which is available to view online. The amount of discount you receive on an order should show as you are adding items to your cart, the total amount is then checked once the order has been downloaded and all criteria underlined in the terms and conditions has been met.
Where can I view my account information?
All statements are available online, after you have logged in you just need to click the My Account button at the top of the page.
How do I amend the value of my standing order?
If you do online banking you can change the standing order yourself or alternatively we can send you an amendment form (or download a copy online), which you just complete and send to your bank.
How do I cancel my account?
We hope that we can satisfy all your free-range meat and fish needs. If however, you really feel the need to leave us we will need confirmation in writing either by email, fax or letter and you will need to contact your bank to stop the standing order, as we cannot do this for you. Please note that all monies in the account can only be used for final meat and fish deliveries.
What is the minimum I can order?
To avoid delivery charges our Easy Monthly Payment Service (account) customers order a minimum of £25 each time ... and our Single Delivery Service (cash) customers buy a minimum of £100 meat. In any event, the delivery charge is just £5.00 - but we prefer not to have to charge anyone for delivery.
I do not like the idea of setting up a standing order to become an Easy Monthly Payment Service customer ... why should I do so?
You are perfectly free to ignore the Easy Monthly Payment Service system if you wish. But our Easy Monthly Payment Service customers benefit in a number of ways:
1) free delivery for orders of only £25+
2) order 3x their standing order amount +/- their current account balance
3) guaranteed price fix for the first 12 months - see our price lock page
4) special offers sent by e-mail
5) no interest charged on negative account balances

Standing orders mean that I am paying you monthly, yet I might not want to order meat and fish every month
That's not a problem ... most of our customers order every 6-8 weeks. But they budget monthly as they are paid monthly. On occasions they may have a debit or credit balance ... it doesn't matter as it tends to average out. You can order whenever you want to, but please bear in mind that the earlier you do so the easier it is to get the delivery slot you want.
Why don't you accept Direct Debits instead of Standing Orders?
We've always wanted our customers to be in control of their payments and with a standing order they can increase, decrease or stop it any time they want to, unlike direct debits.
I might not want the same meat each month ... so why would I want a standing order?
The standing order system makes it easy for our customers to budget and to pay for their meat. We give a full selection of meats, we only deliver what you order, when you order it.

Where can I find cooking instructions for the convenience items?
These can be found online under the recipes section or if not available you can send us an email.
Where does your meat come from?
Various farms which produce top quality free-range meat under the conditions we want to see. Our farmers are at one with us and our existing customers - we want animals to be raised fairly, with freedom to be in the open air when they want. We want them to live in a great environment for the benefit of all.
Why do you source your meat from around the UK rather than locally?
We've been operating now for 24 years and have developed great relationships with our farmers. Having worked together for so long, we regard those relationships and established working practices as being of paramount importance. More farms have moved to free-range and we could source our meat more locally perhaps, but we like to be fair in all our dealings - with our customers, staff and our farmers.
Why are the joints vac-packed?
It seals in the juices in the meat to retain the flavour - and as an additional benefit takes up less space in your freezer!
Why do my Free Range chickens have hock burns
Dear Farmers Choice Customers,

I am Kate from Childhay Manor who supplies Farmers Choice with all their whole free range chickens.

I can fully understand your concerns as I also watched the documentary about chickens with hock burns. I do hope I can put your mind at rest. The burns you are referring to are caused in different ways in conventional rearing and free range which the documentary did not explain.

In conventional rearing the chickens are limited for space and do not have any other option but to lie down all day and they also may not have clean bedding. The chickens are finished within 6 weeks and the weight ratio occuring so quickly can cause burns from little or no movement.

Our chickens are reared over 12 weeks and have a slower growth rate which does not affect their movement, as they are free-range they have a great deal of space. Each morning the doors and windows of the hutchs are opened and new bedding is put in. We alow the chickens the choice to either go outside and roam freely ,or they can stay inside and lie down all day.

If it is wet outside or we have a thunder storm they may go under the trees and this maybe muddy, when this dries it can peel off and leave a graze on their hocks. If a chicken has choosen to lie down more and a build-up has occured, this can cause a similar affect to hock burns. I do hope this answers your concerns.

Yours sincerely Kate

What does B&R stand for?
B&R means that your joint will come boned and rolled
Why do we hang our meat on the bone?
This is one of the most important stages in producing great tasting meat from our prime stocks, which have been carefully selected for taste and texture.
Before we prepare it for you our quality meat is "hung on the bone" for various periods:
Orkney Beef - 21 days
Lamb - 7 days
Free Range Chickens - 4 days
During this time the meat changes to become more tender as the fibres relax and flavour develops, resulting in meat with true depth. Hanging 'on the bone' rather than preparing the meat straightaway means that there is no interference with this important process.
You can see this in our beef which changes from bright red to a dull red-brown that is characteristic of well-hung meat.

So, if hung meat is so good why doesn't everybody do it?
Mainly because it costs them more, as the carcass loses up to 20% of its weight during the hanging period. Valuable space is also required to store the carcasses. For many producers these are an unacceptable cost burden. Some butchers/producers offer 'Matured Beef' that has not been hung on the bone ... it is matured in vacuum bags thereby not allowing the meat to breathe but reducing their costs.
We much prefer to offer our discerning customers top-quality meat, which has been properly raised, well-treated and then matured on the bone to provide the taste and texture for which we are renowned. Quality is of high importance to our customers ... and therefore to us.

Why do you emphasise 'free-range' and not 'organic'?
We are more concerned about the welfare and well-being of our animals. Organic stock may be reared indoors, rather than in normal out-door conditions .... but we prefer our stock to be raised outside in a natural environment, enjoying all the benefits. Due to the pricing structure, many people seem to regard 'organic' as being a higher level than free-range; but we prefer to offer free-range meat that has been raised in good circumstances for the animal and if it also happens to be organic then we regard that as a bonus.
Do I have to order every month?
No - you can order whenever you want to.
How is the meat packaged?
We believe in using the minimum of packaging. Each joint will be vacuum-packed by our butchers. Zip bags are used for multi-packs of sausages, chops etc. By keeping packing to the minimum you can get more in your freezer.
I only have a small freezer and I don't want to buy in quantity.
Due to the way we package the meat you should find that you can get more in than you expect. Our minimum requirement for free delivery is only £25 net so you may find that it will suit you. Some existing customers have small freezers and order more often but in smaller quantity than those customers with larger freezers. Part of your order might not go into the freezer ... you may put it straight into the fridge to defrost, ready to eat tomorrow!
Why will my meat be delivered frozen?
We blast freeze all orders just before they are despatched in our freezer vans (local deliveries within our area). This ensures the meat gets to you in great condition and saves you the hassle of having to freeze it. Just pop it straight into your freezer .... it couldn't be easier!
Your sausages seem different to most that I have tasted. Why?
Sausages are obviously different from 'meat' as they are made to a recipe. Our sausages are made with lean meat and little fat, so they tend to be more solid than conventional fattier sausages. Some customers love them, some don't ... but many customers have 'acquired' the taste and now prefer them.

Delivery

Will you automatically deliver to me each month?
No - it's entirely up to you to order meat
What if I'm not in when my meat is delivered?
Our delivery drivers will leave your meat in a safe place or even pack it in your freezer for you? (Freezer In Garage) - which you choose from a list on the ordering page.
Why don't you deliver outside of the mainland?
Regretably it would be too expensive for us to deliver 'over the water'.
If I do not live in your local delivery area who delivers to me?
We now deliver across the country and we use a Courier Service, they deliver between 9.00am & 17.30pm on Tues, Weds, Thurs and Fridays and we must have somewhere the box can be left.
How is the meat packed for a Courier Delivery?
The box is lined with thick polystyrene, a white bag is put in the box and a layer of ice is put at the bottom, bubble wrap is then put in and the frozen meat added. Another layer of ice is added and the meat is wrapped in the bubble wrap. A thick piece of polystyrene is placed on top and the box is then sealed ready for delivery.
